Cloud Services

What are Cloud Services?

Cloud Services are services, contributed by special providers, called Hosting- or Managed-Service-Provider. The services are offered per internet, instead, on-premise. It means they are not on PC’s or Network-Server installed. The cloud represents a central or distributed hardware architecture, equipped with different services for data management, data security and data processing.

The services offered as Cloud Services range from storage solutions and databases over application platforms and software solutions to complete network infrastructures. The service provided is calculated according to quantity, time or effort. A company that uses Cloud Services can make significant savings in terms of hardware, effort or resources, depending on the service booked.

A survey by Bitkom Research from 2022 showed that cloud computing is becoming increasingly important.
The importance of outsourcing data and services to the cloud is increasing, especially for big data applications.

What are the benefits of Cloud Services?

The outsourcing of hardware and IT services brings numerous advantages that companies should consider individually.

The most important advantages are:

The outsourcing of services to the cloud reduces acquisition costs for hardware and maintenance costs. In addition, the effort for IT staff can be significantly lowered, since special knowledge in the company, especially in the area of data security, no longer needs to be kept available or trained.

One of the most important aspects, when considering cloud migration, is ensuring security in the event of data loss or hacking. Because a Cloud Service with data storage in Germany or the European Union guarantees valid and always up-to-date security standards. In addition, sophisticated technologies guarantee access to the data with a minimal probability of failure.

A major advantage is the scalability of the storage or the usable computing power. In the event of changes, the capacity can be adjusted in the shortest possible time, so that the agility of the company is optimally supported.

With the wide range of services available, companies can easily try out new features and ideas, significantly reducing their innovation cycle.

The outsourcing data and services to the cloud, guarantees a global availability as well as functionality in case of partial system failures.

Thanks to the migration of hardware, data and services, optimal use of resources is possible. In direct comparison to the traditional solution, the reduction in resources in the form of hardware or software also significantly reduces CO2 emissions – a step towards a more sustainable company.

By using Cloud Services, combined with IaaS, the company and the employees can focus on their core competences much easily.

What are the most important components of Cloud Services?

The components of the Cloud Services are usually divided into different services according to their functionality. There are a variety of service models that companies can use profitably. The services currently most used by companies are:

Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS)

IaaS is a Cloud Service model in which the company infrastructure is outsourced into (virtual) infrastructure components such as virtual machines, storage resources and networks.

These resources are accessed and managed in the form of traditional IT environments. The main advantage is the flexibility.

Desktop as a Service (DaaS)

DaaS allows companies to access cloud-based virtual desktops by transferring them to the devices of the users as a complete package, via client software or web browser.

Apart from flexibility in terms of space and time, a significant advantage lies in the savings made through the use of cheaper hardware with lower power consumption.

Platform as a Service (PaaS)

PaaS offers developers a cloud-based platform for a development and deployment environment. This allows them to build applications on the PaaS platform without having to worry about the underlying infrastructure.

Usually, infrastructure components from IaaS are included in this service model, so that administration and maintenance costs in particular are reduced.

Software as a Service (SaaS)

SaaS includes cloud-based services where application software is provided. Most businesses use these applications through a web browser or mobile app, without having to install the software on the devices themselves.

Typically, the infrastructure components of IaaS and the provision of the environment via PaaS are used for SaaS. Examples are e-mail programs or Office365, which are offered as standard cloud solutions.

Other Cloud Services include DBaaS (Database as a Service) and FaaS (Function as a Service). DBaaS offers databases with the complete infrastructure and service. With FaaS, functions are used on demand, those are often micro-services, executed selectively by the provider. In addition, there are mixed forms and hybrid services in which, for example, only partial outsourcing to the cloud takes place, according to data type or period or depending on other conditions. In addition, further services for new application scenarios are constantly being developed.

Generally, the first step in using Cloud Services is the integration of IaaS, followed by further steps if necessary.

What are the most important application areas for Cloud Services?

Since the possibilities for using Cloud Services are very diverse, numerous companies from different industries are already using the one or the other form of Cloud Services for their specific requirements.

Cloud Services are already the standard for the following areas of application and industries – according to some studies, more than 90% of the companies in question are already using this technology.

Start-Ups & Small Businesses

Pioneers in the field of Cloud Services are often Start-Ups and Small Businesses that do not have their own IT department.

In this area, the use of Cloud Services is very common. The companies are using and scaling the services, instead of investing in hardware. This way, the services can be flexibly expanded as the company grows. Above all, however, the companies can also focus on their core competences.

Big Data

Big Data applications typically require large amounts of computing power and storage. So, the option of using the services as flexible as needed, pays off very quickly in this segment.

Software Development

Software developers are per se open to new IT technologies and use Cloud Services for software development. In this area, software licenses and development environments in the cloud are used in addition to computing and storage capacity.

The use of Cloud Services has also been tried and tested in other areas. We are happy to advise you on the benefits for your company

Cloud Services in Business -
For which industries are Cloud Services important?

Cloud Services are widespread, particularly in industries that deal with large amounts of data or data relevant to security. Cloud Services offer advantages if many different people or groups are accessing data and applications. Even in sectors that still have a lot of catching up to do in terms of digitization, such as trade, health care and educational institutions, digitization can be promoted quickly and efficiently thanks to Cloud Services.

Production

A lot of data accumulates in this sector. These can be used for quality assurance and predictive maintenance increasingly. It is also of great advantage if the data can be stored and evaluated across locations.

Commerce

For companies that sell their products over the Internet, outsourcing to the cloud saves internal capacities. In addition, Cloud Services generally offer higher data security than self-hosted systems. After all, the entire process from ordering to delivery, including warehouse logistics, can be handled via Cloud Services.

Craft Businesses

For craftsmen, a secure IT infrastructure that can be reached from anywhere is a great advantage. It offers high mobility during customer assignments: For example, assignments can be logged and billed in real time or spare parts can be ordered directly during the assignment. Thanks to Cloud Services, craft businesses do not have to provide their own highly qualified IT staff.

Healthcare

In healthcare, Cloud Services allow to store, analyze and exchange medical data securely. In addition, the Cloud Services are used in telemedicine, for collaboration between healthcare professionals, and in the development of AI-powered diagnostic and treatment solutions.

Banking &
Financial Services

In particular, the financial industry benefits from cloud technologies, especially from the secure and scalable infrastructure for processing transactions and managing customer data. Also, compliance requirements can be optimally mapped using Cloud Services.

Educational
Institutions

Schools and other educational institutions use Cloud Services to create virtual learning environments, facilitate access to learning materials, and provide collaboration tools for students and teachers.
